I’ve been hooked on SEO since the early days of the Internet—back when Google didn’t even exist and search engines like Yahoo, Ask Jeeves, and AltaVista ruled the web. In 1998, I stumbled across an article about how search worked. It mentioned something called “metadata”—lines of code that could give a website a title and description. Intrigued, I bought a domain, optimized it with little SEO knowledge, and watched my site climb Yahoo’s rankings within weeks. Before long, I was ranking in the top 10 for “SEO” and “Search Engine Optimization.”
Armed with this early success, I started taking on SEO clients while maintaining a full-time job. For the next decade, I kept honing my skills, testing strategies, and staying ahead of algorithm changes.
From Video Producer to Full-Time SEO Consultant
In 2005, I launched a corporate video production business and built a website to promote my services. It did okay, but I knew it could do better. When I noticed a rising demand for VHS-to-DVD transfers in Toronto, I optimized my site for that niche. I hit #1 on Google almost overnight and held that spot for years.
This led to a pivotal moment. A business owner asked me how I got to the top of Google. I showed him the basics, helped him when he ran into trouble, and suddenly, word spread. One referral led to another, and before I knew it, I was busier with SEO than with video production.

By 2008, I had transitioned into full-time SEO, working as an in-house SEO for Direct Energy before moving into agency life. Over the years, I’ve worked with brands like:
