I broke my own rule this past week. It’s not really a hard and fast rule, more like a suggestion. I wrote it up in my e-book
“How to use the power of social networking to find your next job” and whenever I speak to professionals about using social media sites I say the same thing.
On social media sites you should have your own picture, not your dog or cat or a celebrity, it’s YOUR profile, let people see who YOU are.
I normally have my own picture on my profiles. I change it from time to time when I get a new fresh picture that I like.
But I have broke my own rule this week. My current image on both Twitter and Facebook is an avatar I created using an online tool MakeMeZombie.com
It doesn’t look like me, it is a caricature of me. It was fun to create and it’s fun for one of my favourite holidays of the year, Halloween. Now even though I have said I am breaking my own rule, in fact what I am doing is reinforcing the fact that behind the brand of “newmediaMike” there is a real person, a fun person. Just like my Tweets.
Not all my Tweets are business/social media oriented. I show my human side from time to time on Twitter and I encourage others to do the same. Show your followers you are human. Share some non-business related links (within reason), interact with your followers as you would want them to interact with you. Have fun after all, it’s called social media. The first word is social. Be social.
Oh and next week, I’ll be back to my usual avatar.
